All about Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her 96th birthday

On Thursday 21 April, Queen Elizabeth II will celebrate her 96th birthday. To mark this special day, we have compiled a list of interesting things you may not know about her:

  • Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was born on 21 April 1926 at 17 Bruton Street in Mayfair (an eighteenth-century townhouse where her parents lived).
  • The young Elizabeth, and her sister Margaret, were homeschooled by their governess, Marion Crawford.
  • Queen Elizabeth II is well known for her love of corgis. Her first, Susan, was given to her by her father for her eighteenth birthday.
  • Her Majesty is the creator of the Dorgi (a dachshund/corgi mix).
  • The Queen was the first monarch to have their coronation televised. Many people attributed their first television purchase to this historic event which was watched by an estimated 277 million people around the world.
  • This year the Queen celebrates her Platinum Jubilee, making her the longest serving monarch in British history.
