DIVA exhibition at the V&A

We absolutely adore the DIVA exhibition which is running at the V&A until 7 April 2024.

Exploring and celebrating the role of a diva, this retrospective charts the history of popular culture icons from the nineteenth century until today.

Kate Bailey, curator of DIVA, explains: “At the heart of this exhibition is a story of iconic performers who with creativity, courage and ambition have challenged the status quo and used their voice and their art to redefine and reclaim the diva. Rihanna is a multifaceted, independent performer who has used her strong sense of self to shift the needle. She embodies the spirit of the nineteenth century divas and shows us today how divas don’t just create art, they are culture-makers, entrepreneurs and activists. We are delighted to showcase a range of objects that reflect how Rihanna has used her authentic voice to make a difference – from Bajan ambassador to style icon to music pioneer. The V&A with its world class collections of art design and performance and its mission to inspire creativity in all its forms is the perfect stage to celebrate the multifaceted Diva.”

Highlights of the exhibition include Whitney Houston’s black and gold gown, designed by Marc Bouwer, in which she received her three Grammy’s for The Bodyguard soundtrack, several of Rihanna’s iconic ensembles (including the stunning Met Gala black coat-dress designed by Demna for Balenciaga), Elton John’s flamboyant 50th birthday costume (designed by Sandy Powell), Maria Callas’ ensemble from the Covent Garden Opera Company production of Norma and Marilyn Monroe’s fringed black dress from her role as Sugar “Kane” Kowalczyk in Some Like it Hot.

What greatly enhances this treat of an exhibition is the automated headset which relays the music of these performers as you make your way through the show.
