Home of the May Fair

Mayfair earned its name from the May Fair, held from the 1600s during the first two weeks of May in and around Shepherd Market (including where Hertford Street now stands) to raise funds for the Hospital of St James. The last May Fair was held in the 1760s. By this time, the area was being developed on fields belonging to the eminent Curzon family in response to the increasing demand for London homes for the gentry. One of the streets created by the Curzons was Hertford Street, and the area was given the name of ‘Mayfair’ in recognition of the charitable events which had taken place on this land.

Guests may notice that our largest apartment, The Curzon Suite, was named in tribute to the family who did so much for our area.
