Literature in Mayfair on International Literary Day

On #InternationalLiteracyDay, it’s the perfect time to share some interesting snippets about literature in Mayfair.

– Mayfair has featured in literary classics including Sense & Sensibility (Jane Austin), A Handful of Dust (Evelyn Waugh), The Importance of Being Earnest (Oscar Wilde) and The Mating Season (PG Wodehouse).

– Authors Mr & Mrs Robert Henrey wrote from their apartment in Carrington House, Hertford Street, during the 1940s. Robert’s A Village in Piccadilly offers a fascinating insight of the area during that time.

– Our local library is the stunning London Library which was founded in 1841 and houses collections dating back to the 1600s.

– We have the most fantastic bookshops in the area, including Hatchards (founded in 1797 and host to some fabulous book signing events) and Waterstones Piccadilly, which is housed in one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture.

– We are incredibly lucky to have The Mayfair & St James’s Literary Festival each year, which celebrates authors from around the world.
