The breathtaking and thought-provoking new art installation at Somerset House, The Arks of Gimokudan by Leeroy New, has been commissioned to mark Earth Day 2022 (22 April). The fleet of three ships, which give the impression of floating 3 metres above ground within the famous courtyard, are made from recycled materials and plastic waste. Each vessel has been inspired by the history, culture and lores of Leeroy’s home nation, the Philippines, which is the country most at risk from the climate crisis. Whilst highlighting the planet’s plight, the work is incredibly uplifting with the narrative looking to a positive future for the planet.
