What’s on at London’s theatres this summer

On Monday, we were delighted to see Chekhov’s The Seagull at the Harold Pinter Theatre. Running until 10 September, the play explores love and loneliness within a country house setting. Emilia Clarke is outstanding as Nina, and Olivier Award-winning Indira Varma brings a fabulous mix of tragedy and comedy to her character, Arkadina.

One of the most talked about productions this season is the acclaimed Mad House, which is at the Ambassadors Theatre until 4 September. Starring David Harbour (Stranger Things) and Bill Pullman (Independence Day), it’s described by the Evening Standard as “boldly [cracking] open the suffocating messiness of death, family, and mental health”; they have awarded it a very deserving five stars.

Other productions of note this summer include:

  • The Glass Menagerie at the Duke of York Theatre (until 27 August), with six-time Academy Award nominated actress Amy Adams in the lead role.
  • My Fair Lady at the Coliseum (until 27 August), which is the first major West End revival of the musical in 21 years.
  • The retelling of the beautiful classic children’s story The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe at the Gillian Lynne Theatre (18 July 2022 – 8 January 2023).

If you’re looking for musicals which will be enjoyed by all ages, we recommend:

  • Back to the Future at the Adelphi Theatre (until 12 February 2023).
  • & Juliet at the Shaftesbury Theatre (until 25 March 2023).
  • Six at the Vaudeville Theatre (until 2 April 2023).
