Theatre, opera and ballet in London this winter

This is the perfect time of year to enjoy the treat of a trip to the opera, theatre or ballet. There is such a wonderful selection in London this season, with highlights including:

The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Noël Coward Theatre (until 25 November)
This stunning production tells the story of Neil Gaiman’s bestselling novel through puppetry, illusions and wonderful acting.

The Nutcracker, Royal Opera House (6 December – 13 January)
Hailed as “a gleaming Rolls-Royce of a production” by The Telegraph, enjoy Peter Wright’s adaptation of this festive ballet in the historic surrounds of the Royal Opera House.

The Motive and The Cue, Noël Coward Theatre (9 December – 23 March)
Based on the making of Richard Burton and John Gielgud’s Hamlet where two great minds collided, The Motive and The Cue explores tensions in the rehearsal room and the relationship between art and celebrity.

My Neighbour Toroto, Barbican (21 November – 23 March)
Brought to you by the Royal Shakespeare Company and Joe Hisaishi, this beautiful stage adaptation has won six Olivier Awards and five Whats On Stage Awards, and has been hailed as a “huge, healing hug of a show” (The Stage).

Othello, Sam Wanamaker Playhouse (19 January – 13 April)
Experience Shakespeare’s tragedy in the beautiful Sam Wanamaker Playhouse – London’s only candlelit theatre which is located on the site of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.

Giant, Royal Opera House (8 – 15 March)
Premiered at the 2023 Aldeburgh Festival, this critically acclaimed, innovative opera (composer Sarah Angliss’s first) tells the story of Irish Giant Charles Byrne and surgeon John Hunter.
